Rally riders are seen leaving the Halona Blow Hole, a well known and often visited tourist spot on Oahu's south shore. The blowhole is a natural occurrence formed by molten lava tubes from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago. The lava tubes run to the ocean and, when the surf is right, the blowhole shoots water up to 30 feet in the air. The larger the waves, the larger the spray. The lookout at Halona Blowhole is worth the stop. The lookout offers an excellent view of the coastline and outer islands, such as Molokai and Lanai, on clear days. During the winter months, the lookout is a great spot to watch whales at play. |
Rally riders seen here returning to the Leeward side, riding through Nanakuli. The West Coast of O'ahu is fairly well protected from strong surf conditions even during the winter months making the beaches havens for the winter traveler. Coral reefs slope gradually downward providing great swimming year round. The Nanakuli area has a beautiful sandy beach area. |
The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as the "Punchbowl", lies in the middle of Puowaina Crater, an extinct volcano. It was officially dedicated on September 2, 1949, on the 4th anniversary of V-J Day. Of all the national cemeteries, this one has been described as the most beautiful and the most moving. The cemetery consists of 112.5 acres. The Punchbowl was the site of many secret Alii (Royal) burials. It was also the place where offenders of certain kapas (taboos) were sacrificed. In the early 1800's the crater was an important stronghold for Oahu natives who tried in vain to resist the invading Army of Kamehameha when he unified the Hawaiian Islands in 1810. |
Depending on traffic, Halona Blowhole is usually about a 30 minute ride from Waikiki and is a spectacular scenic cruise on the South Shore Kalanianole Highway. In this picture, our rally riders have just passed Hanauma Bay and are riding past the base of a volcanic lava mountain, along the coastline to Halona Blowhole. |
The H-3 is Honolulu's newest highway and is hidden in plain sight. Originally nicknamed by locals as the "Road to Nowhere," this Interstate Highway is also known as the John A. Burns Freeway. Burns was the first state governor of Hawaii. In 1962, he was elected to the first of three consecutive terms. The highway isn't really hidden (and it doesn't connect states), but a visitor probably wouldn't think of a road as the object of a sightseeing trip either. The highway does, however, allow our Rally riders to wind through some gorgeous scenery with spectacular views of mountains and ocean that were formerly viewable only by air. |
After a long days ride, Hawaii State HOG riders are seen here in near silhouette, enjoying the sunset at the Pililaau Army Recreation Center on the is beautiful Waianae coast, the west side of the island. |
Rally Riders cruise past Pacific Sky Diving, Dillingham Airfield where every day people come to turn their world upside-down with a thrilling aerobatic ride. Strap on a parachute, climb into out aerobatic glider with an experienced aerobatic pilot, and hold on tight for the ride of your life. Pull G's and float in zero-gravity. Dillingham Airfield is a general aviation airport operated by the Hawaii Department of Transportation under a 25-year lease from the U.S. Army. The state leases 272 acres of the 650 acre Dillingham Military Reservation and operates the single 5,000-foot runway primarily for commercial glider and sky diving operations. |
Join the H.O.G. Ohana (family) as they ride their way across the island. You will enjoy a full weekend of riding, camaraderie, developing new friendships, and creating lasting memories. There is so much to see, lagoon drives to ride and many places to visit. |
HOG members from many different states park their Harley's long enough to enjoy The Nuuanu Pali Lookout overlooking the 985 foot cliffs of the Koolau Mountain Range, one of the best views on O'ahu. It was here in 1795 that King Kamehameha and his warriors defeated the O'ahu armies by sending them over these steep, forested cliffs and claiming his victory and uniting the Hawaiian Islands. The breathtaking sights and the gruesome history of the battle fought here is enough to cause a chill to run up your spine. |
Rally riders on a continuation of a spectacular scenic cruise on the South Shore Kalanianole Highway. Riders will be soon be viewing Sandy Beach on their right, which offers beauty and danger in the Hawaiian surf. The beach is great for beachcombing. The surf when calm makes this a superb spot for swimming; experienced shore break bodysurfers find that its waves have no equal anywhere. |
As this HOG Rally group prepares for a group picture, it's always a great day in Honolulu to stage a ride at Cycle City, Hawaii's oldest and largest Harley-Davidson dealer serving the Aloha State since 1963. |
As rally rider's cruise on the South Shore Kalanianole Highway, below is the Ka Iwi channel, one of the most dangerous, unpredictable ocean channels in the world. Sturdy shoes and extreme caution is needed as the walk down to the water can be steep and rocky. |
Honolulu has a rainforest you can drive through. It's only a short distance from downtown Honolulu. In the lush, green Nuuanu Valley, where it rains nearly 300 inches a year and is under a thick canopy strung with liana vines, HOG's ride past giant bamboo that creaks in the wind, Norfolk pines, and wild shell ginger. |
Incredible views wait riders at every turn of Round Top Drive. The views extend from Diamond Head to Ewa Beach, with the blue ocean as a backdrop. The twisties and turns of Round Top Drive allow for a HOG riders delight. Local HOG riders riding up Round Top drive stop at Puu Ualaokua Park and show our guest HOG's incredible sights of Honolulu. |
O ahu's Southeast Shore and Windward Coast features some of the island's best beaches separated by rugged rocky shores, lush green valleys and wonderful attractions. |
While Halona Blowhole offers an excellent view of the coastline and the outer islands of Molokai and Lanai on clear days, it offered an excellent setting on this beautiful day for a group picture of these rally riders. |
